University of Michigan uses Wi-Fi to build the Internet of Vehicles

According to US technology media reports, this unprecedented project is managed by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Center (UMTRI). In the next 12 months, about 3,000 vehicles will be included in the plan. Drivers are specially recruited because they often move within a quarter of a circle of AnnArbor. Each car is connected via a dedicated short-range communication channel, a technology similar to the Wi-Fi network you use at home or in a cafe.

"Participants include some parents who need to pick up their children to school or take them to a ballet hall or football field," said Peter Sweatman, UMTRI's director.

All data will be recorded, so the researcher can determine the accuracy of the warning and know which type of warning best helps the driver to stay away from danger. There are no autonomous vehicles yet, but the vehicle is equipped with more sensors.

Most of the cars are the participants' own. The car manufacturer also provided 64 cars equipped with embedded communication devices to connect the car's onboard computer network, and installed the car manufacturer's customized warning interface and multiple cameras.

This project is the result of 10 years of hard work by the US transportation department, automobile manufacturers, and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Center.

The project has invested 25 million US dollars, 80% of the funds provided by the US Department of Transportation. The eight major automobile manufacturers (Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen) provide support for the research through cooperation agreements.

Figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that an average of 34,000 people die from traffic accidents each year in the United States, and it takes about $ 240 billion to maintain road traffic safety. If the project is promoted on a large scale in the future, it will undoubtedly effectively reduce traffic accidents and avoid casualties. Will this be another case where technology makes life better?
