Steampunk + Iron Man: 3D printing makes the fake hand cool

In September last year, some media reported a very complicated 3D printed Ducati 1199 superbike simulation model designed by a lover named Jacky Wan (aka Valcrow). This motorcycle was claimed to be the most complicated FDM 3D printing design at the time and received considerable media attention. Today, Wan brings us a new project that can be equally challenging.

Wan is currently working with Ultimaker on various projects to try and make a variety of movie props. At the same time, Wan became a fan of E-Nable, a nonprofit organization specializing in 3D printed prosthetics.

“Since the manufacture of Ducati Moto, I have been looking for the next challenging 3D printing project.” Wan said, “I used to have a close relationship with some of the great people in Ultimaker. They both used to I'm very involved in some E-nable projects. We all feel that it would be cool to be able to create an E-nable-style fake hand and solve some complaints about the current design."

To put it simply, Wan wants to create a "cooler" 3D printing fake hand that comes in front of it. He wants to create something that makes children proud and enough to attract others' envy, so that disabled children can have their own unique pleasures.

"There are a lot of Iron Man's fake hand designs, so we decided to add a steampunk style to this, so that we can add more things that can be freely created," said Wan.

At the same time, he hopes to make a purely snap-fit design without affecting its function or aesthetics. So, using his most popular 3D Studio Max software, he first used a skateboard to draw a steampunk-style Iron Man hand, and referenced e-Nable open source Raptor Hand fake hand drawings, from the beginning of the entire design.

The steampunk gears on the back of the hand designed by Wan actually have only one function, they are the tensioners of the entire hand. The “skin” on each finger joint secures the pin of the previous finger joint, and then the last joint snaps onto the palm, all the lines are hidden inside, while keeping the entire finger together. “It’s all tied together, so no glue is needed,” Wan explained.

When printing this hand, Wan made repeated trial and error, and it took about a week to make everything OK. Wan sets the resolution to 150 microns when printing larger parts, while the smaller and finer parts are set between 90 and 120 microns. Currently this fake hand is still in the prototype stage, he plans to continue working, solve some small problems, and improve the entire design. After the assembly is completed, it is painted, but the process is very simple, because he divides the artificial hand into different parts according to the extension, which means that each part only needs one color.
